Vermeer is known for his exquisite domestic interior scenes depicting middle-class Dutch life, painted with an extraordinary mastery of light and color. His most famous work, Girl with a Pearl Earring, is often called the 'Mona Lisa of the North.' Despite producing only about 35 known paintings, he is considered one of the greatest painters in history.
His most celebrated works include Girl with a Pearl Earring (c. 1665), The Milkmaid (c. 1658), View of Delft (c. 1660–1661), The Art of Painting (c. 1666–1668), and Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window (c. 1657–1659). Many are held at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Mauritshuis in The Hague.
Vermeer produced only about 35 to 36 surviving paintings from an estimated total output of around 60 works. His small body of work is attributed to his meticulous technique, his work as an art dealer to support his family, and his relatively short life. Despite this limited output, each painting is considered a masterpiece.
Vermeer was renowned for his masterful use of light and meticulous technique. He used expensive pigments like natural ultramarine, and is believed to have used a camera obscura as an aid to achieve his distinctive soft-focus effects. His paintings feature transparent layers of color that create a luminous, almost photographic quality.
After his death in 1675, Vermeer fell into relative obscurity for nearly two centuries. He was rediscovered in 1866 by French art critic Théophile Thoré-Bürger, who published articles identifying and cataloging his works. Since then, his reputation has grown steadily, and he is now considered one of the supreme masters of European painting.
